Located on 6 Runzhoushan Road, Pearl S. Buck’s former residence is a small two-storey brick-layed building.It takes around 1 hour drive westward to Nanjing and 3 hours drive eastward to Shanghai from the residence.The building is characterized with both Chinese and western architectural style: its floor setting,stairs and fireplace are of western style while its front arcade and creasing eaves are of typical Chinese one.

In October 1892, 4-month old Pearl was brought to China by her missionary parents and settled down in Zhenjiang before long .She lived here for altogether 18 years,spending her babyhood and girlhood.Here she mastered Chinese language,received education of Chinese culture and began writing her first novel “The East Wind and The West Wind”.

Pearl S.Buck regarded Zhenjiang as her Chinese home city and cherished deep affections of its landscape and people.She repeatedly mentioned this house in her autobiography and other articles,depicting how she was playing with her little Chinese partners around the house and visiting the neibouring farmers’ homes.

Pearl S.Buck’s former residence has attracted wide spread attentions since the opening of China to the outside world.In 1992 the house was restored on the fund specifically allocated by the Zhenjiang municipal government and the donation of USD50000.00 provided by the Tempe Sister City Association ,AZ,USA and was enlisted as the municipal level historic-cultural heritage the same year.In 2002 the residence was again renovated and enlisted as the provincial level historic-cultural heritage.Numerous pictures and exhibits in the residence are refleting the life of Pearl S.Buck and her missionary parents as well as Zhenjiang’s overseas friendly exchanges.The visitors can also get to learn Zhenjiang’s history,culture and folk customs and habits.
