Zhenjiang is situated in the southern part of Jiangsu Province, on the south bank of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, with Nanjing to the west, Shanghai, Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou to the east; and Yangzhou is in the north across the river.

Zhenjiang City was established over 3,000 years ago. Since ancient times, it has been a hub of waterway communications and a famous commercial port.

The total area of Zhenjiang is 3,843 square kilometers, of which the area of the city proper is 1,023 square kilometers. The total population is 2.89 million, of which the population of the city proper is 993,000.
