PEARL S. BUCK IN ZHENJIANG

Zhenjiang, surrounded by the Yangtze River and the Grand Canal, is a place known for producing great men and women. In June 1892, a baby called Pearl Syndenstricker was brought from the USA to Zhenjiang by her parents, and lived there for the first 18 years of her life. She once said, "I belong to China for I have lived there from childhood to adulthood". China is Pearl S. Buck's home and Zhenjiang is her Chinese hometown. In her childhood, Pearl S. Buck was just like a Chinese child, receiving a traditional Chinese education, speaking Chinese, writing Chinese characters and playing with Chinese children. The Ganlu Temple, where Liu Bei had been married, was her favorite place to go for outings. The Jinshan Temple, where part of the Chinese classic tragedy "White Snake Story" occurred, was also one of her favorite places. Every tree and every blade of grass in Zhenjiang greatly influenced her in her later literary writings. Zhenjiang’s rich culture, local customs, and its characteristics of both northern and southern China, with its contrasting and reflecting mountains and waters, provided endless

inspiration for her later writings and made her humanitarian work more colorful. Zhenjiang, the cradle of her childhood and the starting point of her great successes, left a sweet impression in her mind. In the later half of her life, living in the US, Pearl S. Buck's affection for her Chinese hometown never subsided. She entrusted her Chinese friends to hold a memorial ceremony for her mother, who was buried in the Yuntai mountain of Zhenjiang, and even at her life's end she thought about such things as Zhenjiang's special sesame cake. The Zhenjiang people will not forget this foreign daughter, and we now specially contribute this book in memory of our dear friend. We hope that Pearl S. Buck's humanitarian spirit will echo within you and that her spirit will move your heart.
