IN MEMORY OF HER HOMELAND
On March 3, 1973, Pearl S. Buck passed away. In her last days, she envisioned: "The day is bound to come when the two great peoples of China and America will walk together to a common place with mutual understanding and everlasting friendship." On a tomb of her own design, she had inscripted the characters of her Chinese name: "Sai Zhenzhu". In her years away from China, Pearl S. Buck continued to pay a great deal of attention to what was going on in China and especially in Zhenjiang, her Chinese hometown.
In the same manner the people of her homeland in China have not forgotten this daughter and old friend who took sympathy on and helped the Chinese people. Since the end of the 20th century Zhenjiang has rehabilitated Pearl S. Buck's former residence, held the Pearl S. Buck Literature Writing Forum, published books titled
"Pearl S. Buck", "Pearl S. Buck Research", "Pearl S. Buck Memorial Collection", and others. In addition, " the Jiangsu University Journal" set up a "Pearl S. Buck Research Column". In October 2002 Zhenjiang solemnly held activities in memory of the 110th anniversary of Pearl S. Buck's birthday activities and hosted the Pearl S. Buck International Symposium. In 2003 the Zhenjiang Pearl S. Buck Research Center was founded. In the same year, the Pearl S. Buck International classes were implemented in the Zhenjiang No. 2 Middle School and Pearl S. Buck International in the US appointed teacher ambassadors there. They followed in the footsteps of Pearl S. Buck, continuing her legacy of cultural exchange.
