My thoughts on China
Most of what I know about the Chinese culture is from the media. Movies and books have shaped my current understanding of the country and its people. When thinking about my own personal stereotypes of the Chinese people, I have realized that most of the media I have seen is reflective of ancient China. Movies such as Mulan focus on the historical Chinese traditions, rather than the current day aspects of the culture. When I think of China as a country, I think of historical landmarks, such as the Great Wall of China or the terracotta soldiers. In literature, I have read "The Good Earth" by Pearl S. Buck, and while a bit more current than ancient China, it is still out of date with current Chinese culture. Through this program I hope to develop a deeper knowledge of the modern day China and its people.
