During 2014/2015, the Zhenjiang Pearl S. Buck Museum has been delighted to be working in partnership with the American Alliance of Museums, and with the Pearl S. Buck House National Historic Landmark (Pennslyvania, USA), on the research and exchange project entitled "East Meets West: Redefining Culture in Popular Culture", as part of the AAM's Museums Connect awards programme entitled "Building Global Communities."
This multidisciplinary project is inspired by the legacy of Pearl S. Buck, in that it explores cultural stereotypes in the media and popular culture. Ten high school students from Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA, and ten high school students from Zhenjiang, Jiangsu, China, are collaborating on an online and onsite museum exhibition, conducting community interviews, and are choosing, coordinating and implementing two community service projects that reflect the programme's aims and objectives.
The goals of the project are to inspire students to recognize how popular culture influences their perceptions of other cultures, and to instill in them the leadership and confidence necessary to become activists for positive change. At the completion of the project, the students will have a deeper understanding and knowledge of a different culture, the skills to creatively express their views and educate others, and the global experience to collaborate with people from all cultures on future humanitarian projects.
